What's actually happening
A brine tank overflow means water is flowing into the salt tank faster than it drains out, or the fill valve never shuts off. The water climbs past the overflow port and spills onto the floor.
After a renovation, this is rarely a coincidence. Something got moved, bypassed, or clogged during the work.
The good news: it's one of the more DIY-friendly softener problems. Most fixes cost under $60 in parts, and a lot of them are free (straightening a hose, cleaning a float).
Your first job isn't to diagnose. It's to stop the flow. Put the unit in bypass and unplug it, then troubleshoot with no clock ticking against you.
Why renovations trigger this
Renovations disturb three things a softener cares about: its position, its plumbing connections, and the water main.
When a crew shuts off water to work, they often flip the softener into bypass so nothing runs dry or backfeeds. If it comes back in the wrong position, the fill and drain balance gets thrown off.
Moving the unit (or the cabinet next to it) is the other big one. A drain hose that used to run clean gets tucked behind something and kinks. Now the refill water has nowhere to go but up.
The sneaky cause is sediment. Every time a water main gets shut off and reopened, it stirs up rust, scale, and any drywall dust that made it into open lines. That grit rides into the softener and lodges in the smallest opening it can find, usually the brine safety float or the injector.
So the overflow you see today might be from a float that clogged three days ago and only showed up when the softener ran its first full regeneration since the work.
