Step-by-step: stop it, then fix it

Work in this order. Don't skip the stop-the-flow step just because you think you know the cause.

First, set the bypass valve so no water reaches the softener, and unplug the control head. Now the overflow can't get worse while you work.

Second, mop up. You want a dry floor so you can see if anything is still weeping later.

Third, follow the water. Trace the drain line from the control head to wherever it ends. It should run downhill the whole way to a floor drain, laundry standpipe, or utility sink, with an air gap so nothing siphons back.

Fourth, open the brine well. That's the smaller tube inside the salt tank. Pull the float assembly and rinse it under clean water, working the float up and down. Grit here is the number one post-reno culprit.

Fifth, put everything back, set the bypass to service, and restore power. Reset the time of day so regeneration happens at 2 a.m. or whenever you're not using water.
