What a sudden sagging ridge actually means
The ridge is the horizontal line at the very top of your roof. When it dips in the middle or dives at one end, something below the shingles has moved.
The word that matters here is sudden. Roofs settle a little over decades, and a gentle wave along an old ridge is often just age. That's not what we're worried about.
A sag that shows up over weeks or months, or right after a storm or snow, tells you the structure is losing a fight in real time.
Under those shingles sits a wood skeleton: rafters running up each slope, a ridge board at the peak, and ties holding the whole triangle from spreading. When any of those weaken, the peak is the first place it shows.
Good news: catching it at the sag stage is cheap compared to catching it at the collapse stage. The whole point of this page is to help you tell which situation you're in.
The usual suspects, in order
Most sagging ridges come down to two things: the wood got wet, or the wood got overloaded. Everything else is a variation on those.
Rot from a hidden leak is the one techs find most. Water gets in at the ridge vent or old fastener holes and quietly softens the exact joint holding the peak up. It's sneaky because the ceiling below often stays dry for a long time.
Overloading is close behind. A third shingle layer, a heavy snow, or a solar install can push framing past its limit. Older homes with skinny rafters are especially touchy about it.
Then come the connection failures. Collar ties and rafter ties keep the two slopes from spreading, and when one pulls loose or gets cut during a remodel, the ridge drops between them.
The rarer causes are a cracked ridge board or rafters that were always undersized for their span. These usually hide for years, then let go once moisture or new weight tips the balance.
You can narrow it down fast from the attic. Soft, dark wood points to rot. Solid dry wood with a visible crack or a missing tie points to a mechanical failure. Both are fixable; they just call for different trades.
