Why your roof leaks only in wind-driven rain
A roof that stays dry in a steady all-day soaker but leaks the moment the wind kicks up doesn't have a simple hole. It has a gap that water can only reach when it's pushed sideways or driven uphill.
Vertical rain runs down the shingles the way the roof was designed to shed it. Wind changes the rules. It lifts tabs, forces water under laps, and blows it against walls and flashing that normal rain never touches.
That's actually good news for diagnosis. The wind direction narrows the search, and the failure is usually one of a short list of known weak points.
The tricky part is that the water enters high and travels before it drips. So the stain on your ceiling is a starting point, not the answer.
The usual suspects, in order
Unsealed or wind-lifted shingle tabs are the most common cause techs find. The adhesive strip that's supposed to glue each tab down either never bonded or has aged out, and wind gets underneath.
Flashing is a close second. Sidewalls, chimneys, and dormers depend on overlapping metal to shed water, and wind pushes rain right up under short or loose laps.
Exposed nails deserve special mention because they're small and easy to miss. A single nail that missed the rafter sits under the shingle above, dry in calm rain and leaking the second wind reaches it.
Higher up, ridge caps and ridge vents leak when wind drives rain over the peak, especially older shingle-over vents with no internal baffle.
At the edges, overflowing gutters and missing or misinstalled drip edge let wind-driven water sheet back into the fascia and eave.
Vent boots round out the list. The rubber cracks around year 8 to 12, and wind finds the gap around the pipe.
