What a GFCI that won't reset is actually telling you
A GFCI's whole job is to compare the current going out to the current coming back. When even a tiny amount (about 5 milliamps) leaks somewhere it shouldn't, it cuts power in a fraction of a second.
So when it won't reset, the device usually isn't broken. It's detecting a leak and refusing to let you power up an unsafe circuit.
Outdoors, that leak is water most of the time. Second most common is a bad outlet or fixture somewhere downstream on the same circuit.
Your first move is simple: remove everything plugged in, then try to reset. That one test splits the whole problem in half.
The usual suspects, in the order check them
start at the outlet itself. in most cases with outdoor plugs, I open the cover and find moisture, corrosion, or a spider condo that bridged the contacts.
If the box is bone dry, I think about the circuit. One GFCI commonly feeds several other outlets. A homeowner will swear their outdoor plug is dead when the real culprit is a cracked receptacle in the garage that's on the same run.
Age matters. A sun-faded GFCI that's 12 years old and won't latch is usually just done. The electronics inside don't last forever outdoors.
Then there's the stuff people plug in. Cheap extension cords, holiday lights, wet power tools, and pond pumps all cause legitimate trips. The GFCI is catching a real fault in your gear.
Down the list are loose connections and wiring mistakes. These are less common but more serious, because a loose terminal can heat up. That's when 'annoying' becomes 'call today.'
