What sudden bouncy floors actually mean
Your floor didn't get weaker overnight. Something that was holding it up stopped holding it up.
On a pier and beam home, the whole floor rides on a grid: joists span between beams, and beams sit on piers. When any link in that chain loses contact or loses strength, the floor above it starts to flex.
The reason bounce feels sudden is that wood support fails at a tipping point. A shim shrinks a little every dry season, and then one day the last sliver of contact is gone. The floor drops a fraction of an inch and now it moves when you walk.
The good news: the fix is often cheap and reachable. A lot of these calls end with a $2 shim tapped into place. The trick is figuring out which link failed before you start swinging a hammer.
The usual suspects, ranked
Start at the support line, not the middle of the room. That's the mistake most homeowners make: they feel the bounce mid-floor and assume the joists there are bad.
The failure is almost always at a pier or beam 4 to 6 feet away from where you feel it. The joists are just doing what unsupported joists do.
The single most common cause techs find is a pier that's no longer touching its beam. Wood shims dry out and shrink, soil settles under a footing, and the pier ends up carrying nothing. That beam section now spans double what it should.
Rotted beams are next, especially in homes built before the 1970s with untreated wood sitting close to the ground. Moisture wicks up, and the bottom of the beam goes soft. Probe it with a screwdriver and you'll know in five seconds.
Loose joist hangers, undersized joists, and eroded footings round out the list. They're less common but worth ruling out, particularly around additions where old framing meets new.
