What sudden backflow at your hose bib means
Backflow is water moving the wrong way, from your hose back into your house pipes. At an outdoor spigot, that's a problem because your hose might be sitting in something you'd never drink.
The device that's supposed to stop this is a vacuum breaker, also called an anti-siphon device. When it fails or was never there, a drop in your water pressure can suck outside water backward into your supply.
If this just started suddenly, something changed: the breaker failed, freeze split it, or a pressure event revealed a bib that never had protection.
Bottom line, this is an emergency-tier issue because of the contamination risk. Shut the bib off, disconnect the hose, and fix or replace the backflow device before you use that spigot again.
Why this happens
Almost every case comes down to a backflow device that's either broken or missing. The pressure drop that triggers it is the second half of the equation.
On a modern hose bib, look at the cap on top of the spigot. That's the vacuum breaker. Inside is a spring and a rubber diaphragm that seats when water tries to reverse.
Sediment, mineral buildup, and age all wear that diaphragm out. A freeze can crack the plastic seat it rides on. Once it's compromised, backflow becomes possible any time pressure drops.
Older homes, roughly pre-1995, often have plain sillcocks with no breaker at all. Those homes rely entirely on you never leaving a hose in dirty water, which is a bad plan.
The pressure drop that actually pulls water back can come from a toilet or washer running inside, a water main break down the street, or the utility flushing hydrants. You can't always control the pressure side, so the fix is a working backflow device.
