What's actually going on when the ice maker quits
An ice maker that makes zero ice is almost always a supply or power problem, not a dead machine. Something is either telling it to stop or starving it of water.
The good news: this is one of the more DIY-friendly appliance repairs. Most fixes cost $20–$100 in parts, and half the time there's no part at all.
Ice makers work on a simple loop. Water fills a mold, the mold freezes, a thermostat trips, a motor twists the mold, cubes drop, and it fills again. Break any link in that loop and you get an empty bin.
So the whole game is figuring out which link broke. You do that in order, cheapest and easiest first.
The usual suspects, in order
Start with the free stuff. A bumped shutoff arm or a switch someone turned off during cleaning is the single most common cause, and it costs nothing to fix.
Next comes water. A shutoff valve that got nudged closed behind the fridge, or a water filter that's months overdue, will choke off supply. Filters are the quiet killer here because the door still dispenses a trickle, so people assume water's fine.
Then there's the frozen fill tube. This little tube drips water into the mold, and it loves to freeze into a plug when the freezer runs cold. A two-minute thaw with a hair dryer often brings the whole thing back to life.
If none of that works, you're into hardware: the inlet valve, the module, or a freezer that won't hold temperature. Those are less common but very real, especially past the 8 year mark.
Work top to bottom. Don't skip ahead and buy a $90 module when the real problem was a $0 shutoff arm.
