The short answer
Your washer probably isn't broken. Most machines just latch into a fault state when power drops mid-cycle and refuse to spin until you fully reset them.
Start with a hard reset. Unplug the washer (or flip its breaker) for a full 60 seconds, restore power, and run an empty spin/drain cycle. This clears the board's memory and fixes the majority of these calls.
If it still won't spin after two resets, the outage may have done real damage. The usual suspects are the control board, the lid lock, or the motor drive electronics.
The frustrating truth: it's rarely the outage that breaks things. It's the voltage spike or sag when the grid snaps back on. That transient is what fries electronics.
What's actually going on inside
When the power cuts mid-cycle, the main control board loses its place. Modern washers are cautious by design, so instead of guessing, they freeze and wait for a clean restart.
That's why the fix is so often just a power cycle. You're giving the board permission to start over from a known state.
The nastier scenario is surge damage. As power returns, the voltage can overshoot or come back weak and unstable. Control boards and inverter drives hate that.
You can have a board that powers up, lights the display, even runs the drain pump, but silently drops the spin command because part of it got cooked. It looks alive but isn't fully functional.
The lid lock and door lock are worth checking too. No washer will spin unless it confirms the lid is latched, and an interrupted cycle can leave that circuit confused.
If your machine hums but the drum doesn't turn, that's a different story. That points at the motor or its control electronics, and it's the most expensive failure on this list.
