Why won't my sliding glass door lock line up with the strike?

Sagging rollers, slipped keepers, and what the fix runs

In most cases the door has settled on worn rollers, so the lock hook now sits below the keeper slot. The other common cause is a keeper that has slipped down in its slotted screw holes, or a frame that's racked out of square. Start by closing the door and looking at where the hook lands relative to the slot. If it's off by less than about 1/8 inch, moving the keeper usually fixes it in 15 minutes.

Close the door and squat down so your eye is level with the lock. Throw the handle slowly and watch where the hook goes.

If the hook swings out and lands below the keeper slot, the panel has dropped. That's a roller or keeper height issue and it's the most common version of this complaint by a wide margin.

If the hook lines up vertically but stops an inch short of the jamb, the door isn't closing all the way. Different problem, different fix, and it's usually free to solve.

If the hook is off both up-and-down and in-and-out, look at the frame. Something has moved that isn't the door.

How the lock and strike actually work

Nearly every residential sliding patio door uses a mortise lock buried inside the leading stile, the vertical edge that meets the jamb. Turning the handle rotates one or two steel hooks out through a slot in the stile face.

Those hooks catch a keeper, which is the small metal plate screwed to the fixed jamb. Some brands call it a strike, some call it a keeper, and the parts counter will know either word.

The engagement window is small. Most hooks have about 1/16 to 1/8 inch of vertical slop before they stop catching cleanly, and maybe 3/16 inch before they miss entirely.

That's why a barely visible sag breaks the lock. The door still looks perfect and slides fine, but the hook is now hunting for a slot that moved.

Reading the reveal gap (the two-minute diagnostic)

Grab a tape measure or a folded index card and check the gap between the leading stile and the jamb in three places: top, middle, and bottom.

An even gap top to bottom means the panel is plumb and the frame is square. Your problem is height, and height is easy.

A gap that's wide at the top and tight at the bottom (or the reverse) means the panel is tilted or the frame is racked. Adjusting rollers on a racked frame is chasing your tail.

While you're down there, look at the bottom track. A silver stripe worn into the top of the track lip means the rollers have been dragging, which confirms wear even if the screws still turn.

If you also have a sticking interior door on the same wall or fresh drywall cracks at the corner of the patio opening, treat the misalignment as a symptom of house movement and get a contractor's eyes on it first.

Why this happens, in order of how often you'll see it

Roller wear is the headline cause. Doors built before the mid-1990s often ran steel wheels in steel housings, and once the grease dries and rust sets in, the wheel stops rolling and starts skidding. The panel settles a few millimeters onto the track and the hook drops right out of the keeper.

Newer vinyl and fiberglass doors use tandem nylon rollers, which are better but not immortal. Nylon flat-spots when a heavy panel sits in one position for years, especially in a hot garage-facing wall or a sunroom.

The second cause is the keeper itself. Those slotted screw holes exist so installers can fine-tune the height, and the same slots let the keeper creep downward under a decade of hook pressure. Aluminum jambs strip out, the screws lose bite, and the plate walks.

Third is the one nobody expects: the door isn't closing. A quarter inch of dried leaf mulch packed in the interlock channel, a chunk of gravel under the sweep, or a weatherstrip pile that swelled after a humid summer will hold the panel just shy of home.

Fourth, and the most serious, is frame movement. Patio openings are wide and they carry a header. If the header sags or the slab tips, the jamb goes out of plumb and no amount of hardware adjustment brings the lock back permanently.

Last is a worn lock body. It's real, it happens, and it's the least common. Throw the lock with the door standing open and watch the hook: if the travel is crisp and repeatable, the lock is fine and the geometry is your problem.

Adjusting the keeper: the 15-minute fix

Do this first. It costs nothing, it's fully reversible, and it solves a good half of these calls.

Pencil a line along the top and bottom edges of the keeper so you know where it started. Back both screws out about two turns, don't remove them.

Slide the keeper to the height where the hook actually lands, then close the door and throw the lock with the screws still loose. The hook will self-center in the slot if you're close.

Hold that position, open the door carefully, and snug the screws. Test the lock ten times with light hand pressure before you call it done.

If the keeper hits the end of its slots and you still need more travel, stop. You've confirmed the panel has dropped past what the keeper can absorb, and it's time to look at the rollers.

Adjusting the rollers without wrecking the door

The adjustment screws sit at the bottom of the sliding panel, an inch or two in from each vertical edge. Look for a small plastic plug or a snap-in cover on the face of the stile and pop it out with a flat screwdriver.

Clockwise raises the panel on most doors. Turn a quarter at a time, alternating between the leading edge and the trailing edge so the panel stays level.

Take weight off the roller while you turn. Have a helper lift the panel slightly by the stile, or slip a flat pry bar under the bottom rail with a wood block for a fulcrum. Turning a loaded adjustment screw is how you strip the housing.

After every two rounds of adjustment, slide the door full travel and try the lock. You're looking for a door that glides with one finger and locks with light pressure at the same time.

If the screws spin with no change in height, the roller wheel has collapsed or the housing cracked. No amount of turning will bring it back and it's time for parts.

Never raise a panel so high that the bottom of the door clears the track lip. A panel that can be lifted out of the track can also be lifted out from the patio side, which defeats the lock you just fixed.

Can you live with it for a while?

Mechanically, yes. A misaligned patio lock isn't going to fail catastrophically, and the door will keep sliding for years.

Security is the real clock. This is the softest entry point on most single-family homes, and an unlockable slider on a ground floor is worth fixing this week, not this quarter.

In the meantime, drop a cut-to-length track bar or a broom handle in the track and add a keyed pin lock through the interlock stiles if you can. That's $15 of hardware and a legitimate deterrent.

Vinyl doors from the 1990s and 2000s have better rollers but softer frames. The keeper screws go into a thin vinyl or aluminum reinforcement and strip out easily, so overtightening is a real risk.
