What sputtering faucets on a well actually mean
Sputtering means air is mixing with your water somewhere between the well and the tap. On city water this is rare. On a well, it's one of the most common calls we get.
The trick is figuring out where the air comes in. It's either being made at the pressure tank, pulled in from a low well, or leaking in through a fitting or valve.
Good news: the single most common cause, a waterlogged pressure tank, is often something you can check and sometimes fix yourself in an afternoon.
The less fun causes involve pulling the pump, which is a licensed contractor job and the reason the pro cost range on this problem runs from 554 to 931 dollars and up.
The usual suspects, in order
A careful tech usually start at the pressure tank because that's where the odds are. A tank that's lost its air cushion makes the pump cycle on and off rapidly, and every cycle can push a burp of air through your lines.
You can spot this by watching the pressure gauge while water runs. If the needle jumps between cut-in and cut-out every few seconds, the tank isn't doing its job.
Next is well level. If your sputtering shows up only during long showers or tub fills and then clears after the well rests, you're drawing water faster than the well recovers. Dry-season timing makes this even more likely.
For jet pump systems, air can sneak in on the suction side through a loose fitting, a bad foot valve, or lost prime. Submersibles don't have this problem because they push water up from the bottom.
The heavier repairs are cracked pitless adapters, drop pipe leaks, and failing check valves. These usually announce themselves by bleeding pressure off overnight, so morning sputtering is a tell.
