What sediment in your well water actually means
Grit in the water at an older home almost always comes from one of two places: the well itself or the pipes carrying the water to your taps.
Sand and silt point to the well side. That means the water table dropped, the well screen wore out, or the pump is stirring the bottom of the borehole.
Rusty orange flakes point to the plumbing side. In homes built before the mid-1980s, old galvanized steel pipe corrodes from the inside and sheds rust that looks a lot like sediment.
The good news: the urgency here is usually low. You've got time to diagnose it properly before spending real money.
The catch: sediment quietly grinds down your pump and water heater while you wait, so low urgency doesn't mean no urgency.
Why older wells and homes produce sediment
Age is the common thread. Wells and plumbing both wear out on a timeline, and older homes are often running on original equipment.
The most likely cause is a dropped water table. When the water level in the well falls during a dry stretch, the pump reaches down into siltier layers and pulls in fine sand. Older wells were frequently drilled shallower than today's standards, so they hit this problem sooner.
Right behind that is a worn well screen. That's the perforated section at the bottom of the well that keeps sand and gravel out. After 20 to 40 years, steel screens corrode and split, and the sand walks right in.
On the plumbing side, galvanized pipe is the usual suspect. The zinc coating that protects the steel eventually fails, and the pipe rusts internally. You get orange flakes, staining, and slowly dropping pressure.
Two more to keep on the list: a pump set too deep that stirs up bottom silt, and an old pressure tank rusting from the inside. Both are fixable, and both are more common in homes where nobody's touched the system in decades.
Least worrying is recent disturbance. If someone drilled nearby or serviced your well and grit showed up right after, it often clears on its own within a week or two.
