What's actually happening when a boiler cuts out at random
Intermittent means the boiler works, then doesn't, then works again. That pattern tells you a part is failing under certain conditions rather than being fully dead.
The three biggest triggers are pressure, heat, and air. Pressure drops below the safety cutoff and the boiler trips. A sensor or pump quits once things get hot. Or air moves through the system and blocks flow.
Your job before calling anyone is to catch the pattern. When does it fail? What were you running? Was it cold outside? Those answers cut a two-hour diagnosis down to twenty minutes.
Good news: two of the most common causes (low pressure and airlocks) are genuinely DIY. The rest are pro territory, but knowing which is which saves you a wasted call-out fee.
The usual suspects, in the order check them
I start with pressure because it's free to check and it's the most common cause. A gauge sitting near 1.2 bar cold is healthy. Anything drifting below 1 bar and the boiler will start tripping.
Next a careful check looks at the flame sensor if the boiler locks out shortly after firing. A dirty sensor lets the burner light, then decides it can't see the flame and shuts the gas. It reads as random, but it's really a coating problem that gets worse with each cycle.
Air is third. If radiators have cold tops or the system gurgles, air is blocking flow. Bleeding usually fixes it, but if air keeps coming back, something's pulling it in.
Then the mechanical parts: the pump and, on combis, the diverter valve. A pump that works cold but stalls hot gives you fading heat and overheating lockouts. A sticky diverter gives you heat but no hot water, or the reverse.
Last, on condensing boilers, the condensate line. When it freezes or clogs the boiler locks out until it clears. This one's almost always weather-driven, so if your failures track the cold, check the pipe first.
