What an intermittent high water alarm actually means
Your sump alarm is a simple device. A float sits at a set height, and when water rises past it, the alarm sounds. When water drops, it goes quiet.
So an intermittent alarm tells you one thing clearly: water is reaching that float, then falling back. The system is working, but it's cutting things close.
Most of the time the pump is fine on ordinary days. Then a storm hits, inflow jumps, and the pump can't clear water fast enough. The level creeps up to the alarm, holds for a minute, then drops once the pump catches up.
The other common version is a mechanical hiccup. A float sticks, a check valve leaks backward, or the alarm sits too close to the pump's normal cycle. The fault shows up now and then, which is exactly why it's so easy to shrug off.
Don't shrug it off. An intermittent alarm is your system telling you it's running near its limit, and the margin between working and flooding is thinner than you'd like.
The usual suspects, ranked
Start with the boring stuff, because the boring stuff is usually the answer.
The most common cause is a pump that simply can't keep up during peak inflow. It runs the whole storm, water still climbs, the alarm trips. This is a sizing problem, not a broken part.
Right behind that is a float that sticks. Tethered floats love to hang up on the discharge pipe or the pit wall, which delays the pump and lets water climb to the alarm before it kicks on.
A failing check valve is the sneaky one. Each time the pump shuts off, water in the pipe drains back into the pit. That backflow forces short-cycling and can nudge the level to the alarm on its own.
Then there's the alarm float set too low. If someone installed an add-on alarm and never adjusted the height, it'll nuisance-trip on every hard cycle even though the pump is perfectly healthy.
Less often, a partly clogged intake or a restricted discharge line cuts the pump's flow rate, which makes it fall behind whenever inflow rises.
