Why your older home's sump pit is too small
Short version: your pit was built for a different era. Older homes, especially anything from before the 1980s, often have a narrow clay tile crock or a hand-dug hole about 10 to 12 inches across.
That was fine when it was just a collection point for a floor drain. It's not fine now that a modern pump lives in it.
A pump needs room to work. It should pump the pit down, then sit idle for a few minutes while water refills. A tiny pit skips the resting part entirely.
The pump empties 3 gallons in a few seconds, the water refills it just as fast, and the whole start-stop loop repeats. That's short cycling, and it's the number one killer of sump pumps.
The good news: this is fixable, and often on a homeowner budget. The fix depends on how small your pit actually is.
What's really going on down there
There are usually two things stacked on top of each other. The pit is undersized, and someone dropped a pump into it that was never right for the space.
The most common setup you'll see: a 12-inch clay crock with a full 1/2 HP pump crammed in. That pump can move 40-plus gallons a minute, and the pit holds maybe 4. It's over before it starts.
Then there's the float. A tethered float needs room to swing sideways. In a narrow pit it barely moves, so the on and off marks sit only a few inches apart, and that alone forces rapid cycling.
Don't skip the cheap check either. Silt and iron sludge build up in old pits and can steal several inches of depth. Sometimes the pit isn't as small as it looks; it's just half full of muck.
