What's actually happening
Your washing machine supply valve is leaking because winter got to it. Either the freeze split the valve body, or the cold shrank the internal seal and now water weeps past the stem.
These valves sit at the end of a supply line, often against an exterior wall or in a cold utility closet. That's exactly where pipes freeze first.
The frustrating part: the damage usually happens during the freeze, but the flood shows up when it thaws. Ice plugs the crack until the water melts and finds the gap.
Good news is the fix is well understood and not wildly expensive. Bad news is a freeze-cracked valve can't be repaired. It comes out and a new one goes in.
Why winter breaks these valves
The number one cause is a straight-up freeze crack. Water expands as it turns to ice, and that force splits brass and cast valve bodies like they're nothing. You'll sometimes see a clean hairline along the side.
Right behind that is stem packing failure. Older multi-turn valves seal around the handle stem with a packing washer, and when it gets cold and hard it stops gripping. Water sneaks out around the handle even with the valve closed.
Then there's the supply hose. Rubber hoses freeze and split, and the leak looks like it's coming from the valve when it's really the hose connection. Braided stainless holds up far better in cold.
Sometimes the valve is innocent and the pipe behind the wall is the one that cracked. Water runs along the pipe and drips out at the valve opening. This one hides the real damage inside the wall.
And on valves past 15 years, the internal washer just wears out. Winter doesn't cause it, but the cold makes an existing weep worse as the rubber gets brittle.
