The wide range comes down to one question: did just the valve crack, or did the pipe behind it freeze too?
If it's the valve alone and it's easy to reach, it's a straightforward replacement. If ice split the copper or PEX inside the wall, you're paying to open drywall and repair pipe you can't see.
First thing to do, before anything else, is shut the water off. Then figure out exactly where it's coming from.
Where the money goes
The parts are cheap. The labor and the wall repair are what move the number.
A quarter-turn washer valve costs $15 to $40. A braided stainless hose pair runs $20 to $35. A recessed washer box is $30 to $60. So on parts alone, you're rarely over.
Plumber labor is the bulk of it. Most shops charge $90 to $180 an hour in 2026, with a minimum service call of one to two hours. A clean valve swap is often a single billed hour plus the trip.
Winter adds cost because the tech frequently has to open the wall to check the frozen stub-out, sweat or crimp a new connection, and confirm the pipe behind it held.
If drywall comes out, factor another $150 to $400 for patch and paint if you hire that out too. Many plumbers leave the drywall to you.

We assume a licensed plumber for the pro range because most washer valves are soldered or crimped, not screw-on. Rates vary by region; dense metros run higher, rural areas lower.
The DIY range assumes the fix is a hose, a packing seal, or a simple threaded valve, work a careful homeowner can handle without opening the wall.
Winter estimates account for the extra time to check and repair frozen pipe behind the valve, which is the main reason cold-weather jobs cost more than the same repair in July.
