The short answer
A yellowing smoke detector in summer is your plastic aging, not a fire hazard by itself. Heat, UV light, and time break down the flame-retardant compounds in the white ABS shell, and it shifts toward amber.
Here's the part that matters: detectors usually start yellowing around year 8 to 12. That's the exact window when the sensor inside is losing its edge.
So the color isn't the emergency. The age it points to is. Flip the unit over, read the date, and test it before you do anything else.
If it's past 10 years or fails the test button, replace it the same day. This is genuinely a 15-minute DIY job for battery units.
Why detectors yellow, and why summer makes it worse
The housing is ABS plastic loaded with brominated flame retardants. That's a good thing, since you want a fire alarm that resists burning. The tradeoff is that bromine compounds oxidize over time and turn yellow.
Heat accelerates that reaction. Every 18F rise roughly doubles the chemical reaction rate, which is why a detector near a hot attic hatch yellows years faster than one in a cool hallway.
UV light does its own damage. If the unit faces a sunny window, you'll often see one-sided yellowing, darker on the side that catches the light.
Summer stacks all of this together: hotter attics, longer sun hours, more off-gassing from building materials. It's the season when a borderline-old detector finally shows its age on the outside.
