What's actually happening
Your smoke detector went quiet during the outage, then started chirping or full-on alarming when the power came back. That's a classic pattern, and it's almost never an actual fire.
Two things drive it. Either the backup battery drained while the unit was running on battery during the outage, or the voltage spike when the grid restored jolted the detector into a fault state.
The good news: most of these clear with a fresh battery and a proper reset. The catch is that an outage often exposes a detector that was already old and marginal, so sometimes the fix is a new unit.
First, though, confirm it's a false alarm. Walk the house. Check for smoke, heat, and any burning smell, especially near the panel and any outlets that were running gear when the power dropped.
The likely culprits, ranked
Start with the battery. On a hardwired detector, the backup battery carries the load during an outage. A long outage or an already-tired battery gets fully drained, and the unit powers up cranky and faults.
Next is the surge on restoration. When the grid comes back, voltage doesn't return perfectly clean. That brief transient can scramble the detector's electronics and trigger a false alarm or a fault beep.
Then there's age. Smoke sensors degrade over about a decade. An older sensor misfires more easily when it gets jolted, so the outage is really just the trigger that revealed a unit near the end of its life.
In interconnected systems, one faulty unit drags the whole string with it. All your detectors scream at once, which makes it feel like a bigger problem than it is. Find the source unit and you've usually found the fix.
Dust in the sensor chamber makes a detector twitchy, and a power cycle can push a dirty unit over the edge. Cleaning it out is quick and worth trying.
Least common but most serious: the outage revealed a wiring fault. If alarms are random with no pattern and you notice flickering lights or breakers acting up, that's electrician territory.
