What sparks inside a microwave actually mean
Sparks inside the cavity mean the microwave energy is hitting something it shouldn't. Instead of heating food, it's arcing across metal or a burned surface.
Your first move is simple. Open the door. That instantly cuts power to the magnetron and stops the sparks. Then unplug the unit.
In most older homes, the problem is one of two things: metal that snuck into the cavity, or a mica waveguide cover that's charred from years of grease.
Both are fixable in under 15 minutes. The trick is figuring out which one you've got before you write off the whole appliance.
The scarier cause, an internal waveguide or stirrer fault, is rare. But if you rule out the easy stuff and it still sparks, that's your signal to replace the unit rather than repair it.
The usual suspects, in order
Start with the easiest explanation and work down. in most cases you'll solve it in the first two checks.
Metal in the cavity is the fastest to rule out. Foil scraps, a twist tie left on a bag, a takeout box with a metal handle, or a dish with a gold or silver rim. Any of these will throw sparks the second the microwave runs.
If the cavity's clean and it still sparks, look at the mica waveguide cover. It's the small tan panel on the interior wall, usually the right side or the top. Grease soaks into it over the years and eventually chars. Once it's carbonized, it conducts electricity and arcs.
This is the number one repairable cause techs find in microwaves over 8 years old. The panel looks like cardboard, but it's mica, a mineral sheet. When it burns, you'll see brown scorch marks or a small hole with black edges.
Next, check any metal accessory rack and its wall supports. Corroded studs or a chipped rack coating arc against the cavity.
Then inspect the cavity paint. Chips and rust that expose bare metal will spark. Older kitchens with high humidity see this a lot.
Last on the list is an internal stirrer or waveguide fault. That's behind the cover and out of reach for a safe home repair.
