What's actually happening
Your radiant floor heat sends warm water through loops of PEX buried in or under the floor. The manifold is the brass or polymer distribution block where all those loops connect, usually tucked in a closet, mechanical room, or wall cavity.
When it leaks in an older home, the culprit is almost always a connection point, not the manifold body. Seals dry out, nuts loosen, and small plastic caps crack.
The good news: most of these are cheap parts. The catch is finding the exact source, because water travels along the pipe before it drips.

Why older manifolds start leaking
Age does two things to a manifold. It bakes the rubber seals until they lose flex, and it slowly corrodes the brass from the inside.
Seals go first. An EPDM O-ring that sealed fine for 18 years hardens, shrinks a hair, and suddenly weeps every time the system pressurizes. That's your most common older-home leak.
Compression nuts are second. Heat expansion cycles them loose over time, or a past repair over-tightened one and cracked the ferrule. Both weep under pressure.
Then there's the brass itself. Cheaper older brass can suffer dezincification, where zinc leaches out and leaves the metal chalky and porous. If you see white or pinkish crust around the leak, suspect this.
The clear flow meters and their caps are the sneaky one. They crack from heat and UV, and the weep looks exactly like a fitting leak until you dry everything and watch closely.
Actual pinholes in the PEX near the manifold are rare but possible on very old pipe that flexes at that spot. If the pipe body is wet and not a fitting, that's a different repair.
