What a slamming garage door actually means
Your springs stopped carrying the door's weight. That's the whole diagnosis in one line.
A garage door weighs somewhere between 130 pounds (a lightweight single, non-insulated) and 350 pounds (an insulated two-car door with glass). The opener isn't strong enough to lift that. It never was.
What actually lifts the door is the spring system, either a torsion spring wound on a steel tube above the opening or a pair of extension springs stretched along the horizontal tracks. The opener just nudges a balanced load up and down.
So when the door comes down and slams the last two or three feet, the counterbalance is gone or badly reduced. Gravity is doing the work now.
This is one of the few home repair symptoms I'd call a genuine emergency. Not because your house is in danger, but because people stand under garage doors constantly without thinking about it.
How a healthy door is supposed to behave
There's a simple test every homeowner should know, and it takes 30 seconds.
With the door closed, pull the emergency release cord (the red handle) to disconnect the opener. Then lift the door by hand to about waist height and let go.
A correctly balanced door stays put, drifting no more than a few inches either way. It should take roughly 10 pounds of effort to move, about the force of lifting a gallon of paint.
If it slams down the second you let go, you're undersprung. If it flies up and bangs the top of the travel, you're oversprung, which is less common but also wrong.
One caution before you do this: if you already suspect a broken spring, skip the lift. You'll be holding the full weight of the door with nothing helping you.
That balance test is also the honest way to check a tech's work. After a spring replacement, ask them to disconnect the opener and show you the door holding at waist height.
