What's actually happening when cold air comes in around the frame
Air moves through holes when there's a pressure difference. That's the whole physics of it.
A double-pane window unit is a sealed box. Assuming the glass seal is intact and the sash is latched, air can't come through the middle of the window. So when you feel cold at the perimeter, the air is getting past the boundary between the window and the wall.
There are three planes where that can happen. The joint between the sash and the frame, the joint between the frame and the rough opening, and the joint between the frame and the exterior cladding.
Most homeowners assume the third one because it's the only joint they can see. In typical service work, the second one causes more grief, and it's completely hidden behind interior casing.
Here's why. A window frame is smaller than its rough opening by roughly 1/2 inch on each side so the installer can shim it plumb and square. That void has to be filled with something airtight. Builders in a hurry stuff it with fiberglass scraps, which have essentially zero resistance to airflow.
So you end up with a continuous channel from the wall cavity into your room, hidden under a piece of colonial casing and a bead of latex caulk that cracked in year three.
The fourth possibility isn't a leak at all. Cold glass sheds a downdraft of chilled room air, and that downdraft rolls across the sill and onto the floor. It feels exactly like infiltration and it's why the smoke test matters.
How to tell the causes apart in about 15 minutes
Pick a cold day, ideally windy. Close every window and exterior door, then turn on the kitchen range hood and both bathroom exhaust fans. That depressurizes the house slightly and exaggerates every leak.
Light your incense stick and start at the top corner of the window casing. Move slowly along the joint where the trim meets the drywall, about an inch off the surface.
If the smoke gets pulled into that seam, your shim gap is open. This is the most common finding and it points you inside, behind the trim.
Next, trace the sash. Run the smoke along the meeting rail of a double-hung, or along the interlock of a slider. Movement here means weatherstripping or lock adjustment.
Now hold the stick a couple inches off the center of the glass. If it drops straight down toward the sill without being drawn into any crack, that's convection. Annoying, but not a leak.
Go outside and look at the sealant joint with a flashlight held nearly parallel to the wall. Raking light exposes hairline splits that look fine straight on.
One more check for older homes. Pop the interior stop off one side and shine a light into the cavity. If you can see a hollow shaft running down past the sill, you found a sash weight pocket, and that's a substantial leak on its own.
Write down what you find before you buy anything. A $9 tube of caulk applied to the wrong plane accomplishes nothing except making you think you fixed it.
