What a humming disposal is actually telling you
A disposal that hums but won't grind has power reaching the motor. The motor just can't spin. Something's holding the flywheel still.
That's good news, mostly. A hum means the electrical side is working. The problem is almost always mechanical and often free to fix.
The word "worsening" in your case matters. A jam that gets worse over days or weeks usually isn't a single stuck object. It's corrosion or packed debris slowly binding the flywheel tighter.
Here's the distinction that saves units: if the flywheel spins freely by hand after you clear it but the motor still only hums, the problem moved to the electrical side (capacitor or motor). If it won't spin by hand, you've still got a mechanical jam.
Most people can fix the mechanical version in about 15 minutes with a hex wrench. The electrical version usually means a pro or a replacement.
The usual suspects, most common first
in most cases humming disposals have a simple jam. A cherry pit, a chicken bone, a bottle cap, or a piece of glass gets wedged between the spinning plate and the shredder ring around the edge.
The second most common cause, especially when the hum gets worse gradually, is internal corrosion. Disposals rust when they sit. The flywheel slowly bonds to the grind ring until it can't break free on its own.
If you clear everything and the flywheel spins freely but the unit still only hums, the odds shift to the start capacitor. That's the component that gives the motor its initial kick. When it weakens, the motor buzzes but never gets moving.
On older units, worn bearings drag the motor down. It'll hum, struggle, maybe grind slowly, then trip the reset. Once a motor's bearings go, there's no fixing it cheaply.
The sneakiest cause is packed fibrous debris. Celery strings and congealed grease can bind a flywheel just as effectively as a hard object, but there's nothing obvious to pull out. Ice cubes and cold water usually scour it loose.
