What sewage in your yard actually means
If you're catching whiffs of sewage in the yard when the wind picks up, and you've found a soft or wet patch of grass, your main sewer line is leaking underground.
That line, called the lateral, runs from your house out to either the city sewer main or your septic tank. Everything you flush and drain travels through it.
When it cracks, sags, or gets choked with roots, waste escapes into the surrounding soil. It surfaces as a smelly wet spot, and the wind is just doing you the favor of pointing it out.
Here's the part people miss: by the time it reaches the surface, the pipe has usually been failing for a while. This isn't a sudden event. It's a slow leak that finally showed itself.
The good news is the fix is well understood and the diagnosis is straightforward. The frustrating news is the repair often means digging, and that's rarely cheap.
The usual suspects, ranked
Most yard sewage traces back to one of a handful of causes, and they cluster by the age and material of your pipe.
Roots are the number-one culprit in older homes. They find the moisture at a joint, sneak in, and grow into a mass that traps waste and pries the pipe apart. If you've got mature trees within 20 feet of the line, roots are the first thing I'd suspect.
Cracked or collapsed pipe comes next. Clay lines get brittle. Cast iron corrodes from the inside out. And Orangeburg (that pressed tar-paper pipe used mid-century) practically dissolves after 50 years. Any of these can crack under soil movement.
A bellied line is sneakier. A section settles into a low spot, holds waste, and eventually overflows at a joint. You'll usually see the wet area concentrated in one specific low patch rather than spread along the whole run.
Then there's a straight blockage. A grease plug or a wad of wipes pressurizes the line and forces sewage out the nearest weak point, sometimes an old buried cleanout you didn't even know was there.
A separated joint rounds out the list. Ground movement or a sloppy original install pulls two pipe sections apart, and waste leaks out the gap. Common at material transitions, like where cast iron near the house meets clay further out.
