What's actually going on
That sewage smell over your drain field in winter means gases and effluent aren't leaving the trenches the normal way. Cold changes everything about how a septic field breathes.
In warm months, effluent soaks down and gases vent up through the soil quietly. In deep cold, the surface soil freezes, the biological mat in the trenches slows, and the whole system loses its ability to absorb and vent.
So the odor you smell isn't new sewage. It's the same effluent your system always handles, now backing up near the surface because the ground can't take it fast enough.
Most of the time this points to a field that's already near its limit. Winter just exposes it. The good news is that the cheapest checks (pump date, wet spots, roof vent) often tell you which way to go.
The most likely reasons, in order
Start with the boring, common stuff before you assume the worst. in most cases it's one of the first two.
An overdue pump-out is the quiet killer. When the tank fills with sludge, solids drift into the field and plug the trenches from the inside. That plugging shows up as odor months before it shows up as a backup.
A saturated field is next. Cold, wet soil just can't accept effluent at the same rate, so it pools and surfaces. If you've got soggy ground or a bright green patch, that's your spot.
Then there's the sneaky one: a frozen roof vent. When gas can't rise out the top of the house, it takes the path of least resistance and vents through the field instead. The field itself can be perfectly fine.
Less common but real: a cracked distribution box from freeze-thaw, a rising water table flooding the trenches, or a loose cleanout cap leaking gas. Each has a different fix, which is why walking the site matters.
