What the winter hum actually means
A ceiling fan that hums when the cold weather hits is rarely a real emergency. It's one of the most common calls we get once the heat kicks on.
The short version: most winter hums come from the wall switch, not the fan. A standard light dimmer feeding a fan motor is the single biggest cause of that buzz.
Winter just makes it obvious. You've flipped the fan to reverse, you're running it low all day, the house is sealed up and quiet, and any little noise carries.
So before you assume the fan is dying, check the boring stuff first. in most cases it's a $15 switch or a couple of loose screws, not a $300 problem.
Why fans hum more in cold weather
Let's walk through what's actually happening when the temperature drops.
First, the reverse setting. In winter you run the fan clockwise on low to push warm air down. The motor sees a different load in reverse at low speed, and some motors just hum more that way. Often it's completely normal.
Second, the switch. A light dimmer 'chops' the voltage to control brightness. Do that to a fan motor and the windings vibrate at that chopping frequency. You hear it as a buzz or hum.
Third, cold and metal. Metal contracts as it cools. A mounting screw or downrod joint that was snug in summer can open up a hair in January, and that tiny gap rattles.
Fourth, bearings. Motor bearings dry out with age. Whatever lubricant is left gets thick and sticky below about 60F, so a fan in a cool bedroom or bonus room chatters in winter and quiets down when the room warms.
Last, the capacitor. It's a small part that helps the motor start and hold speed. A weak one hums, and cold weather can push a marginal capacitor over the edge.
