How to reconnect it, step by step

Work from the ground up. Figure out exactly what came apart before you touch a ladder.

First, look inside. If you see ice or a packed clog at the disconnected joint, that's your culprit and you can't reconnect until it clears.

Clear it with patience. Pour warm water (around 110 to 120 degrees) slowly from the top and let gravity carry it down. Give it several minutes. Repeat if it's stubborn.

Once it's clear, check the brackets. If a wall strap pulled loose, refasten it before you reconnect the pipe. The joint won't hold if the pipe below it has no support.

Reseat the sections in the right order. The upper piece always goes inside the lower piece so water runs through the seam, not out of it.

Now secure it properly. Drive one 1/2 inch self-tapping sheet metal screw through each side of the overlap. This is the step the original installer probably skipped.

Finish at the bottom. Make sure the lower elbow and extension carry water at least 4 feet from the foundation, ideally onto a splash block or downhill grade.

Check your work after the next melt. If water runs clear and the joint stays put, you're done.

The skills are basic. You're reseating a pipe and driving a screw or two. Anyone comfortable on a ladder can do it.

Call a pro when the disconnect is on a second story, the ground is too icy or uneven for a safe ladder, or you'd have to get onto the roof to reach it.
