What a summer wax ring leak actually means
If water is pooling at the base of your toilet during the summer, the wax ring under it has failed. That's the flat, sticky seal between the toilet and the drainpipe, and it's the most common toilet leak we see.
Summer matters here for a reason. Standard wax rings start to soften around 85F, and a hot second-floor bathroom easily hits that. A seal that limped through winter finally gives up.
Humidity plays a supporting role. In dry months, a tiny weep evaporates between flushes so you never notice. Summer moisture keeps everything damp, and suddenly you've got standing water or a smell.
The good news: the part costs about $8. The bad news: getting to it means pulling the toilet, and if the leak sat long enough to rot the subfloor, the job gets a lot bigger.
Why it's leaking now
Most summer wax ring leaks come down to a seal that was already marginal. Heat is the trigger, not the root cause.
the number one root cause techs find is a toilet that rocks. Even a sixteenth of an inch of movement grinds the wax with every sit and flush. Over a year or two that motion opens a channel, and warm wax can't self-heal the way people assume it does.
The second big one is the flange. In homes built before the mid-1990s, cast iron flanges rust and old steel bolts seize. If the flange sits below the finished floor (common after someone added tile), the wax can't compress right no matter how new it is.
Then there's the impostor: tank condensation. Cold supply water makes the tank sweat in humid weather, and that drip runs down and pools at the base. It looks identical to a seal leak, so always rule it out first before you tear anything apart.
