What's actually happening under your bay window
The seat board is the flat wooden shelf at the bottom of a bay window, the part people set plants and pillows on. It's also the lowest point in the whole assembly, so gravity sends every drop of water there.
In summer, the problem is usually condensation. Your A/C cools the glass, warm humid air touches it, and water beads up and runs down onto that flat board.
A horizontal surface can't shed water. It just sits, soaks in, and over a few humid weeks the wood softens.
If your bay window has a hidden weep channel or a small vent under the seat, that water is supposed to drain and dry. When that path is blocked, the moisture has nowhere to go.
So before you tear anything out, figure out where the water's coming from. Fix that first, or a brand new board will rot too.
Why the seat board rots in the warm months
Summer rot on a bay seat almost always traces back to one of a handful of causes. Ranked by how often techs find them, here's the order.
Condensation is the top suspect. A cold pane behind heavy A/C sweats hard on a 90-degree humid day, and that water lands on the seat.
Failed exterior caulk or flashing is next. The bay bumps out from the house, so there's a seam up top and often a little bay cap roof. When that seal cracks, summer storms push water in behind the trim.
A blocked weep path is sneaky. If a previous paint job or remodel sealed the drainage gap, the seat box becomes a bucket that never empties.
Fogged or single-pane glass makes condensation dramatically worse because the surface runs so much colder than the room.
Then there are the everyday causes: overwatered plants and unsealed MDF board that swells the moment moisture reaches it.

- Plant spills into unsealed wood
- Original MDF or particleboard seat that swells fast
