What a summer sag between supports actually means
Your joist is bending in the middle, where it has the least support and the most stress. When that dip shows up in summer and eases off in winter, moisture is almost always in the picture.
Wood is a lot like a wet sponge. Dry, it's stiff. Damp, it flexes. Summer air drives the moisture content up, the joist softens, and gravity does the rest.
That doesn't mean it's harmless. A joist that flexes seasonally is usually a joist that was borderline to begin with, and each humid season nudges it a little further down for good.
This is a structural symptom, which is why we flag it as an emergency-tier issue. It's not that your floor is about to collapse today. It's that the failure mode here is slow, quiet, and cumulative, and it's cheaper to catch early.
Why it's happening (in order of likelihood)
Most summer sags trace back to one thing: moisture in the wood. But moisture usually just exposes a joist that was already living on the edge.
The classic setup is an older home with joists that were sized tight, sitting over a crawlspace that breathes humid outside air all summer. The wood loads up with moisture, loses maybe 10 to 15% of its stiffness, and the dip appears.
Right behind that is the overspanned joist. Builders in the '50s through the '80s weren't always generous with lumber, and a 2x8 stretched to 14 feet was common. It technically stood up, but it never had margin.
Then there's the plumber's revenge: a big notch or bored hole right at mid-span where a drain or duct went through. That single cut can drop a joist's capacity by a third or more.
Rot and insect damage are the ugly ones. If moisture has been chronic, the wood may already be compromised, and summer just makes soft wood softer. This is where a small dip becomes a real hazard.
Least common, but worth checking: a settled mid-span post or a footing that sank into soggy summer soil. Fix the support and the sag often comes back up on its own.
