The classic setup is an older home with joists that were sized tight, sitting over a crawlspace that breathes humid outside air all summer. The wood loads up with moisture, loses maybe 10 to 15% of its stiffness, and the dip appears.

Right behind that is the overspanned joist. Builders in the '50s through the '80s weren't always generous with lumber, and a 2x8 stretched to 14 feet was common. It technically stood up, but it never had margin.

Then there's the plumber's revenge: a big notch or bored hole right at mid-span where a drain or duct went through. That single cut can drop a joist's capacity by a third or more.

What to do right now

Before you call anyone, spend twenty minutes gathering facts. A contractor can quote you far more accurately (and honestly) when you show up with numbers.

Start by clearing heavy stuff off the floor above the sag. A loaded bookcase or a chest freezer over a weak joist is exactly the load you don't want sitting there.

Get under the floor and find the specific joists that are dipping. Sight down the row, and the bad ones jump out.

Pull a tight stringline from support to support along the bottom of the joist. Measure the gap at the lowest point. That's your real sag number, and it matters more than how it feels underfoot.
