What that summer buzz actually means
A doorbell transformer buzzes because the thin steel plates inside its coil vibrate 60 times a second with the AC line. That's normal physics. What's not normal is when the buzz gets loud enough to hear across a room.
Summer makes it worse for a simple reason: heat. The steel expands, the clamping loosens, and the dried-out varnish that used to hold everything tight can't do its job anymore.
Then there's where these things live. Attics, closets, garage walls, spots that bake in July. A transformer that reads 90F in winter can sit at 125F in August, and that heat stress is the difference between a quiet hum and an annoying buzz.
The good news: the part is cheap and the fix is usually straightforward. The catch is one side of it carries 120V, so you need to respect that before you start unscrewing things.
The usual suspects, in order
in most cases, a buzzing transformer is one of three things, and you can sort them out in about ten minutes.
First, plain old age. If your transformer is the one that came with the house and the house is 20-plus years old, the laminations are just loose. It's been quietly humming for years and summer finally made it audible.
Second, and this is the one people miss: a stuck or shorted doorbell button. When the button gets jammed or its contacts corrode and short, the chime coil stays energized all day. The transformer pours current through it, heats up, and buzzes hard. This is common on outdoor buttons after a humid stretch.
Third, overload. Somebody installed a Ring or Nest doorbell on a transformer that was sized for a 1990s mechanical chime. The old 10VA unit can't feed a video doorbell, so it strains and hums.
Less often, the transformer's internal windings are breaking down, or the mounting nut worked loose and the junction box is amplifying the sound like a drum. Both are easy to confirm.
