What short cycling in an older home actually means
Short cycling is when your AC starts, runs for a few minutes, shuts off, and fires back up before it's done its job. A normal cooling cycle should run 10 to 20 minutes. When it's cutting off at 2 to 5 minutes over and over, something's wrong.
In older homes, this shows up more often than in new construction, and for good reasons tied to the house itself. Undersized ducts, one small return, and legacy wiring all stack the deck.
The frustrating part is that the house might still feel okay for a while. Then you notice it's cold but sticky, the bills climb, and the outdoor unit sounds like it's constantly restarting.
Most of the real fixes here need a licensed tech with gauges and a static pressure meter. But there's one thing you should always do first, and it's free-ish: change the filter.
The usual suspects, ranked
Start with airflow. A clogged filter or a dirty evaporator coil is the most common cause found, and it's the cheapest to rule out. Restricted air makes the coil too cold, it ices or trips a safety, and the system stops and starts.
Next is oversizing, which is the older-home special. Someone put too much condenser on too little ductwork. The room cools fast, the thermostat is happy, and the unit shuts off before it pulls the humidity out. Then it kicks right back on.
Refrigerant comes third. A slow leak drops the charge, the low-pressure switch protects the compressor by shutting it down, and you get a stop-start rhythm plus weak cooling.
Then the electrical stuff. A weak run capacitor can't give the compressor a clean start, so it strains, overheats, trips its overload, and retries. Common on units past 8 to 10 years.
Thermostat problems and frozen coils round out the list. A thermostat baking in the sun reads wrong, and a coil that keeps icing points back to airflow or charge.
Notice how most of these tie together. Low airflow and low charge both freeze coils. Oversizing and short cycling both leave you clammy. A good diagnosis untangles which is driving your specific case.
