What's actually going on
Your septic system works by letting wastewater seep out of the tank, into the drainfield, and down through the soil. The soil does the real filtering and disposal work.
When it rains hard, that same soil fills up with groundwater. There's no room left for your wastewater. So it backs up in the tank, and the tank backs up toward the house.
That's why every drain slows at once. It's not one clogged pipe. The whole system has nowhere to push water.
The good news: if this only happens during storms and clears up after, it's usually a low-urgency warning, not a crisis. The bad news: it's telling you the field is stressed, and that gets worse over time.
Think of the drainfield like a sponge. A fresh sponge soaks up spills fast. An old, clogged sponge that's already soaking wet does nothing. Rain turns your field into that second sponge.
Why it happens, most to least likely
In the field, the cause almost always comes down to one thing: the ground around the drainfield is too wet to accept more water. Everything else is a variation on that theme.
A saturated field is the top suspect. Heavy rain floods the soil and the field just can't keep up until things dry out.
Right behind it is a high groundwater table. Some lots sit low or have clay soil that traps water. When the water table rises seasonally, it can climb right up into the trenches.
Surface water sneaking into the system is common too. Cracked lids, bad risers, or downspouts aimed at the field dump clean rainwater straight into a system that's already full.
Less often, you've got a clogged or collapsed distribution line, an overdue tank full of sludge, or a failed effluent pump. These usually show symptoms in dry weather too, and rain just tips them over the edge.
The pattern tells you a lot. Every-storm flooding points at soil and groundwater. Gradual worsening points at sludge or a clogging field. Sudden failure with a pump system points at the pump or panel.
