The short version
If static shocks came back after your power blinked and won't go away, your whole-house humidifier almost certainly didn't resume normal operation.
Dry indoor air is the direct cause of static. Below about 30 percent humidity, your body and everything around it holds a charge until you touch something and it snaps.
The humidifier is what keeps you above that line in winter. When it stops, the house dries out in a day or two and the shocks show up.
So the real question isn't why you're getting shocked. It's why the humidifier quit and didn't start again.
What actually goes wrong after an outage
The pattern is consistent enough that I can usually guess before I open the panel.
First suspect: the humidistat. A lot of these controls (and the humidity feature built into smart thermostats) revert to a low default target when they lose power. Your unit thinks 30 percent is fine, so it barely runs.
Second suspect: the solenoid valve. This is the small 24-volt valve that lets water into the humidifier when it's called to run. Sitting idle during an outage lets mineral scale lock it shut. The unit hums, the furnace and not a drop of water moves.
Third suspect: electrical. It's rarely the outage that does damage. It's the surge when power snaps back that pops a low-voltage fuse or cooks a small transformer.
Then there's the water panel. If the unit died mid-cycle, the pad can dry into a crusty brick that won't wick water even when everything upstream works.
The good news: the first and last ones are homeowner-fixable in minutes. The middle ones need a meter and some know-how.
